Артур Эш — первый чернокожий теннисист в мире. У него были семья, ребенок и блестящая карьера. Он продолжал играть до тех пор, пока не попал в больницу. Спортсмену сделали срочную операцию на сердце, и во время переливания крови занесли ВИЧ. Пять лет Эш ничего не подозревал, и только когда в 1988 году пришлось перенести еще одну операцию, врачи сказали ему о болезни.

Спортсмен приложил все усилия, чтобы справиться с вирусом и помочь другим. Эш создал Фонд по профилактике ВИЧ, но сил у спортсмена хватило на пять лет. В 1993 году Артур заболел пневмонией, и организм не смог справиться с этой болезнью из-за иммунодефицита.

Концерта Queen на стадионе «Уэмбли» в Лондоне в 1985 году стал самым громким в истории группы. 75 тысяч зрителей, прямая трансляция по всему миру, Элтон Джон, Дэвид Боуи, Пол Маккартни, Стинг, Black Sabbath и U2 среди приглашенных звезд — это был грандиозный успех…

Тогда же Фредди узнал о смертельном диагнозе.

Меркьюри скрывал, почему прекратил выступления, хотя, конечно, в прессу уже просочились слухи о его болезни. В 1989 году группа прекратила выступления, но не работу в студии. Это была инициатива Меркьюри. Он хотел жить. Фредди похудел и своим внешним видом пугал даже друзей, но не хотел сдаваться. Помимо альбома Barcelona, записанного с Монсеррат Кабалье, Фредди вместе с Queen записал альбом Innuendo. Музыкантам пришлось записать несколько черно-белых клипов, чтобы хоть как-то скрыть состояние вокалиста. На съемках клипа на песню Show must go on, которая стала своеобразным прощальным гимном Фредди, приходилось делать перерывы, потому что Меркьюри терял сознание.

24 ноября 1991 года Фредди Меркьюри скончался в своем доме в Лондоне от бронхиальной пневмонии, прогрессирующей на фоне СПИДа.

Советскую власть гений балета раздражал, и уж чего точно не могли ему простить, так это гомосексуализма. Во время гастролей Кировского (Мариинского) театра в Париже за Нуреевым следило КГБ. После парижских концертов труппа улетала в Лондон, однако Нурееву было приказано вернуться в Союз — якобы для выступления в Кремле. Конечно, танцор понимал, что его ждет, и был прав: Нуреев был заочно приговорен к колонии с конфискацией имущества. В аэропорту Парижа за пару часов до вылета Нуреев совершил легендарный «прыжок к свободе», вырвавшись от провожатых и буквально упав в руки французских полицейских. Позже этот прыжок Нуреев успешно обыграл в своих партиях.

В Европе Нуреев давал по 300 спектаклей в год, завоевывал поклонников, богател — и любил. Ему приписывали связи с Ивом Сен-Лораном, актером Энтони Перкинсом (также скончавшимся от СПИДа), балетными танцорами и дирижерами. Подозревать о своем диагнозе Нуреев начал в 1984 году и тогда же сдал анализ крови. ВИЧ подтвердился. Танцор начал лечение не сразу и принимал экспериментальные лекарства, но все же год за годом продолжал угасать. Нуреев умер в Париже в 54 года.

Основатель первой во Франции кафедры психоанализа Мишель Фуко заразился ВИЧ, когда медицина была бессильна. В 1984 году он потерял сознание и был доставлен в больницу, но диагноз поставили не сразу. Из больницы ученого так и не выписали.

Энтони Перкинс

Актер, 1932−1992

Звезда триллера Хичкока «Психо» был бисексуалом. До 1973 года он встречался с хореографом и танцором Гроувером Дэйлом, но женился на актрисе Берри Беренсон. Актер боролся с затянувшейся пневмонией в 1992 году, но не смог преодолеть болезнь из-за СПИДа. О том, что он инфицирован, актер не подозревал.

Его вдова Берри Беренсон погибла во время терактов 11 сентября 2001 года. Она летела в угнанном самолете, который врезался в Северную башню Всемирного торгового центра.
